All About Ybor City And Cigars

The City of Ybor is a historic neighborhood in northeastern downtown Tampa, Florida, USA. Founded in the 1880s by Vicente Martinez-Ibor and other cigar makers and inhabited by thousands of immigrants, mostly from Cuba, Spain, and Italy.

The city of Ybor is unique in South America as a thriving city, mostly inhabited and owned by immigrants. The neighborhood has unusual features among modern communities in the south, particularly the multi-ethnic and multiracial populations and their many communities of mutual assistance.

Employing thousands of well-paid workers, the cigar industry helped Tampa go from an economically disadvantaged village to a bustling city in about 20 years, calling it Cigar City.

The city of Ybor grew and flourished from the 1890s to the Great Depression of the 1930s when a decline in demand for quality cigars reduced the number of cigar factories and mechanization of cigar production significantly reduced employment opportunities in the neighborhood.

The process accelerated after World War II and the continuous displacement of residents and businesses continued until much of the former bustling area was nearly abandoned in the late 1970s.

Reorganization efforts failed until the 1980s when the influx of artists began a slow gentrification process. In the 1990s and early 2000s, part of the original 7th Avenue neighborhood became a nightclub and entertainment district, and several old buildings were created for new uses.
